Which Tennessee sharpshooter captured 132 German soldiers in October 1918?
Why the answer is Alvin York
Alvin York was a backwoods Tennessee farmer and devout Christian who at first sought exemption from the draft because of his faith. After long conversations with his commanding officers and study of Scripture, he concluded he could serve with a clear conscience.
On October 8, 1918, in the Argonne Forest in France, York’s patrol came under heavy machine-gun fire. Using the shooting skills he learned hunting turkeys, he silenced the guns and, with a handful of men, marched 132 German prisoners back to American lines.
York received the Medal of Honor. He turned down many offers to profit from his fame, but in 1941 agreed to a film, Sergeant York, and Gary Cooper won the Oscar for playing him. York used his earnings to build schools in rural Tennessee.
