Nailed it!
The answer is John Wayne.
Which movie star was nicknamed “The Duke”?
Why the answer is John Wayne
John Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison in Iowa in 1907 and grew up in California. As a boy he had an Airedale terrier named Duke and was always seen with it, so local firemen started calling him “Little Duke.” The name stuck for life.
After years in small Westerns, he became a star in John Ford’s Stagecoach (1939). He went on to appear in more than 150 films, including The Searchers, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Quiet Man and The Green Berets.
Wayne won the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing one-eyed Marshal Rooster Cogburn in True Grit (1969). He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom after his death in 1979.
