The answer is 12.
After a night of prayer, Jesus chose twelve men from among His followers and named them apostles, meaning “ones who are sent” (Luke 6:12–16). The number echoes the twelve tribes of Israel.
The Twelve were Peter, Andrew, James and John (two sets of brothers, all fishermen), Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot. After Judas betrayed Jesus, the apostles chose Matthias by lot to take his place (Acts 1:26).
Jesus also sent out a larger group of seventy (some manuscripts say seventy-two) to go ahead of Him to the towns He would visit (Luke 10).
